Only Lovers Left Alive is a visually terrific romance thriller about a vampire couple. Jim Jarmusch has created a stunning universe in which there is a “normal” vampire couple coping with modern times and dealing with their personal problems. There are lots of great references to music, arts, and history among the idea that these people are living on earth for many years.

I don’t want to write a review about the film, I just want to write a quick impression. The film was so steady but also surprising in some moments. The atmosphere of an evacuated Detroit is illustrated perfectly alongside the Arabian eye-catching architecture which is both familiar and strange at the same time. The prominent yellow cast which dominates the night shows this strange world perfectly.

The main characters and the cast are fabulous. Tilda Swinton can’t be any better than what she has done for the role. The characters are perfectly formed in few yet effective points. You can define them with obvious key elements for each one: Adam is sensitive, passionate, and secretive about his music. Eve is loving and caring. Ava is a trouble maker. These characteristics are simply planted in the script.

A Lyric Video

It’s not that kind of a vampire movie. It’s elegant and unique. You are not watching a horror movie with hard lighting and cruel images. It can be considered more of a poetic sophisticated type of horror. It sure scares you many times but in a special way.
